    Description

Heavy cavalry of the major European powers of the 19th century took their lineage from the armored knights of Medieval times, as metal helmets and cuirasses protected the horsemen from slashing saber blows. In 1847, the British heavy cavalry adopted the "Albert" pattern helmet, a spiked helmet with falling horsehair plume, which could be removed when on campaign. Different front plates and colors of plumes denoted different units, leading to a dazzling array of headdress throughout "Her Majesty's army". As the power and accuracy of weapons increased, the Albert helmet was replaced by more practical designs, but continues to be worn to the present day by the famous British Household Cavalry responsible for escorting the Queen and other members of the royal family in ceremonial processions. British Albert helmets have been of great interest to collectors for decades, leading David J.J. Rowe to write an authoritative reference book on the subject in 1999. This "HEAD DRESS OF THE BRITISH HEAVY CAVALRY" ALBERT PATTERN HELMET REFERENCE BOOK is in near mint, unread condition, with only some light scattered storage wear evident (most pictured). Otherwise, the book is in near mint shape, with no other damage. Most interestingly, it boasts an elegantly illustrated dust jacket over hardcovers, and sports 213 pages full of descriptive text, period pictures, and color photographs of British Albert helmets of the Household Cavalry, 1st to 7th Dragoon Guards, 1st, 2nd, and 6th Dragoons, and the Yeomanry, various 1842, 1847, 1855, 1871, and 1902 pattern Albert helmets for those units, wonderful details regarding front plates, plume styles and colors, mounts, and fittings, proper care and display of those iconic pieces of headdress, and a plethora of other invaluable information.
